How to make a messy bun party-ready by Nikki Phillippi
Use dry shampoo.
Want to know how to make a messy bun party-ready? Well, Nikki suggests starting with ‘second day hair‘, as this will make your bun easier to create. Just spritz your hair with the Toni& Guy Perfect Tease Dry Shampoo (concentrating on the roots), and lightly brush your hair back – and now you’re ready to start styling!
Create a parting.
Next, using your fingers or the tip of your comb, create a parting (roughly 3 inches-deep) on the right side of your head. Then, take a small piece of hair (about an inch) from the right side of your head near the parting, before taking another section of hair from the left side. Use 2 section clips to keep these pieces hair out of the way for now.
Tease your hair.
Now it’s time to turn your attention to the large section of hair at the back of your head. Split your hair in half horizontally and gently tease the top section of hair with a brush.
Create your bun.
Let down your tresses and smooth them with your hair brush. Remember: do this very gently, as you don’t want to undo all that volume you’ve just created!
Then, gather your hair into a low ponytail and create a looped bun. You can do this by pulling only half of your hair through the hairband, and adjusting your bun by tucking in your strands where needed.
Twist your hair.
Remember those 2 sections of hair you clipped out of the way earlier? Now it’s time to let them down. Divide your first section of hair into 2 and twist them together. Draw this twist to the back of your head and wrap it over and under the bun, using bobby pins to secure it in place.
Twist the other side.
Repeat the process with the second section of hair: divide it into 2 and twist them together. Wrap and pin the twisted hair, over and under the bun.
Editor’s tip: Want to add some last minute volume to your hair? Then take a leaf out of Nikki’s book and use a makeup brush – or the end of a rattail comb – to gently pull the hair up and forward. Smart, right?
Mist your tresses with hairspray.
Now that you have your finished look, set your messy party bun with a generous mist of the VO5 Classic Styling Ultimate Hold Hairspray. This quick-drying hairspray will help hold your ‘do all night long!
