Curly black hair: How to do a twist-out
Wash and condition.
All good hairstyles start with a good wash and care routine, so begin by prepping your curly black hair for the twist-out. Wash and condition your hair using the Dove Advanced Hair Series Quench Absolute Shampoo and Conditioner (£5.99 each*), especially designed for curly and coarse hair.
Create a parting.
Using a pintail comb, create a parting. Where you place your part is up to you, so pick a position (centre or side) according to the way you want your hair to fall.
Divide your hair.
Divide your hair into four equal sections. Twist and clip each section, so they stay out of your way for the moment.
Prep first section.
Release one of your sections near the nape of your neck. Apply your leave-in conditioner of choice, making sure your strands are evenly coated for maximum nourishment.
Create your twist.
Take a 1-2 inch wide section of hair and divide it into 2 equal parts. Tightly wrap the 2 sections around one another to create a simple twist.
Keep twisting.
Take another section of hair, apply more leave-in conditioner, and create another twist. Repeat this process until you’ve completed the entire section of hair.
Repeat.
Undo the section of hair on the other side of your head and repeat steps 4-6. Do this until all of your hair is twisted.
Leave overnight.
Once you’ve completed twisting all of your hair, wrap a silk scarf over your mane to help protect against friction, and then leave your hair to set overnight.
The take down.
The next morning, it’s time to take down your twists! Carefully unravel each twist and fluff the strands to give your hair more volume.
Fluff your hair.
Take an afro pick and use it to fluff your hair until you get your desired look.
Final look: The finished twist-out.
And there you have it! Beautifully defined curly black hair. Consider the world conquered!
