Modernist middle parting

Summer is the season of beach waves and bouncy curls, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t take a more modernist approach and embrace super sleek, straight hair for a party or two.

Spotted on many a designer runway for spring/summer 2016, it seems poker-straight hair is slowly making a comeback as one of this year’s hottest – and most understatedly chic – styles. Don’t forget to continue the minimalist theme and team with a classic middle parting, and perhaps add a bold red lip to amp up the look for evening.

Brushed out curls

Soft, brushed out curls are perfect for adding a dose of glam to your summer party look. They’re also perfect for medium hair as there’s enough length there to make an impact, but not too much as to appear too heavy or full-on.

To get the look, start by spritzing your hair with TRESemmé Heat Defence Spray (300ml, £4.99*). Divide your tresses into small sections (approximately 2-3 inches-wide), then start curling with a 1 or 1.5-inch curling wand, making to curl each section in the same direction. Do this until you’ve curled your entire head, then part your hair into a centre or side parting, depending on which look you want to go for.

Finally, spritz your mane with a medium-hold hair spray – like the Toni&Guy Classic Medium Hold Hairspray (£7.49*) – and leave for 5 minutes to set, before gently brushing out the curls out to form cohesive, undulating waves.

Half-up mohawk braid

If you’re heading to a festival this summer, this mohawk braided hairstyle – AKA unicorn braid – is guaranteed to keep you looking and feeling super cool.

To create the look, section off the top part of your hair vertically from your front hairline to the back of the crown (which measures around 3 inches wide). Create a Dutch braid on this section of hair, starting from your forehead, until you reach the back of the crown, then continue to weave a standard plait all the way down until you reach the end. Secure with a hairband.

To make the braid appear thicker and bigger, loosen it up slightly by gently tugging at the weaves using your index finger and thumb. Then, to finish, spritz your mane with VO5 Classic Styling Firm Hold Hairspray (£2.99*) to secure the look in place all day long.

Blossoming beach waves

No list of summer party hairstyles would be complete without beachy waves now would it? To take your waves up a notch in the style stakes and make them totally party-ready, why not combine them with a super cute flower crown? Or, if you’re not quite ready to commit to a full crown, flower-adorned hairgrips are another great option (see Diane von Furstenburg’s SS16 runway for reference!).
