1. Create Volume

To recreate 1980s hairstyles, you’ll need lots of volume and bouncy curls. Heated styling tools, like curling tongs or heated rollers, are an easy way to get your hair looking Flashdance-worthy. But before you reach for your appliances, don’t forget to guard your hair against heat damage by using a heat protectant, like the TRESemmé Heat Defence Spray (300ml, £4.99*). While using a hair dryer or styling with straighteners or curling tongs, it protects your tresses from heat up to 230°C**. Just generously spray your hair before styling.

2. Curl your locks

Once you’ve prepped your hair with a heat protectant, it’s time to start curling your locks. Start by taking a section of hair (roughly 1-2 inches); hold your curling tong vertically with your clamp facing you. Clamp your section of hair, about an inch from the ends and gently curl, rolling your tong out and away from your face, towards your roots. Then, depending on your hair texture, hold your tong in place for a few seconds before releasing. Continue this curling process until you’ve completed your whole head of hair.

3. Use Creme

When you’ve finished curling your tresses, take a small amount (roughly the size of a 10-pence piece) of the VO5 Smoothly Does It Frizz Free Creme (£3.99*). Coat your hands with the product and gently loosen your curls with your fingers, while simultaneously finger-combing the cream into your hair. For extra volume, gently tease your hair using your fingers.

4. Finish with Hairspray

No 1980s hairstyle would be complete without hairspray now, would it? So don’t forget to finish off your ‘do with a generous mist of the TRESemmé Runway Collection Make Waves Creation Hairspray (£5.99*). This will help keep your curls cute and bouncy without any crunchiness!

Editor’s tip: Don’t have curling tongs handy? You can still recreate this look at home. Just read our guide on “how to curl your hair with a straightener” and “how to use hot rollers“, now!
