Gwen Stefani’s mane moments will No Doubt leave you in awe
From Don't Speak to Hollaback Girl, Gwen Stefani is the ultimate queen of avant-garde hairstyles! ?
Since bursting on the music scene aged just 17-years-old with her band No Doubt, Gwen Stefani has been spoiling us with a HUGE array of eye-catching hairstyles. While many may know Gwen for her flawless platinum blonde hair hue, there is much more to her hairstory than that, believe us.
From avant-garde eye-catching ‘dos to glamorous retro looks, there is no hairstyle Gwen hasn’t rocked (and totally slayed) in her 30+ year career. And as the hugely influential megastar turns 48-years-old this week (Happy Birthday, Gwen!) we Holaback at Gwen Stefani’s mane moments. So, What You Waiting For?
Gwen Stefani’s best mane moments
1997: Bantu knots
Gwen was the lead vocalist of the ska-rock band No Doubt and would always hit the stage with different hairstyles, like these beautiful Bantu knots. These lovely knots are a protective style and can also be worn to create clever heatless-curls (yes, you read that right).
1998: Blue hue
Before Gwen hit the platinum blonde bottle, she was already partial to a bold hair hue – and this blue smurf-like colour has to be one of our favourite looks to date.
But she didn’t stop with just one hair trend in her look here, as Gwen is also sporting space buns and proving, yet again, that she is a true pioneer of hot hair trends. Seriously, how is she always years ahead of the rest of us?!
Editor’s tip: Tempted to try a new shade for yourself? Just be sure to invest in a wash and care system specifically made for coloured tresses. We love the Dove Colour Care Shampoo and Conditioner, which will help maintain your gorgeous hue’s vibrancy, while also making your hair feel more nourished!
2001: Platinum babe
Then in 2001, everything changed (we like to call it Gwen Stefani 2.0). Showing off her striking platinum blonde colour, the hue that would fast become her signature style, Gwen wore her silky hair long and straight on the red carpet.
While celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe and, more recently, British singer Rita Ora (who has even credited Gwen as her style icon!) have become known for their platinum locks and bold red lip combo, no one quite does it like Gwen.
Editor’s tip: To get hair as shiny as Gwen, try spritzing your mane with some VO5 Smoothly Does It Tame and Shine Spray for an added gloss boost.
2003: Flapper girl hair
Hop a couple more years ahead and Gwen is now working serious 1920s flapper girl vibes. From the long draped necklaces and low-waist dress to the classic curly bob, the star looks like she has transported in back in time with this roaring look.
This undone finger waves style has been replicated over and over thanks to recent catwalks shows, plus the hit movie The Great Gatsby. So if you’re tempted to emulate this classic style at home, come take a peek at our step-by-step hair tutorial, here.
2004: Harajuku updo
Never one to shy away from a bold hue or show-stopping hairstyle, Gwen Stefani outdid herself with this Harajuku meets Frida Khalo updo.
With the use of clever clip-in buns, Gwen jazzed up her creative updo with a eclectic array of floral and jewelled hair accessories – only she could pull off something so wonderfully quirky!
2006: ’70s-inspired lob and bangs
Taking inspiration from the 1970s, Gwen went for the perfect lob and bangs combination in 2006. Keeping her blonde hue sparkling bright, Gwen wore her medium-length long bob straight with a tucked under finish and full bangs.
This style even transitioned well into the ’80s, later being dubbed ‘Scarface hair’ thanks to Michelle Pfeiffer’s character Elvira Hancock in the 1983 movie. Just a quick glance at some of our fave celebs and you will see the style still being worn today – we’re looking at you Bella.
2011: Ninja bun
This updo is B-A-N-A-N-A-S (sorry, not sorry) and we love it! Taking her top knot to new heights, Gwen Stefani went for a kick-ass ninja bun in 2011. Piling her hair into a high bun, the singer then left strands to fall around her hairline for a softer, more undone finish.
Editor’s tip: Spray your hairbrush with the VO5 Ultimate Hold Hairspray before pulling it through your mane. This will help tame any pesky flyaways, while also giving your hair a natural finish.
2015: Gorgeous half-up, half-down
Upping the glamour in 2016, Gwen went for this chic half-up, half-down hairstyle for the American Music Awards. With her soft natural waves and beehive, Gwen looks like she has stepped straight off the set of Hitchcock film noir.
